Real Life, Beautiful Light: Outdoor Summer Family Session
Late summer light makes everything feel warmer, and this outdoor summer family session at Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary gave us exactly that. The trails were lush, the sun was dropping low, and this family showed up ready to just be themselves.
Golden Hour on the Trails
We timed this session for that last stretch of daylight, when everything turns gold and the shadows go soft. Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary has wide meadow clearings tucked between thick tree lines, and the light just pours through. We shot wide to capture the landscape, then moved in tight for the moments that mattered most.
The kids were on their own program. Honestly, that’s when we do our best work. A giggle turns into a full sprint. A tackle hug comes out of nowhere. Those aren’t posed, and they’re the frames families come back to over and over. We kept the camera moving and let the chaos unfold.
If you’re considering Spring Valley for your own family photos, go in the evening. The canopy filters the light beautifully, giving you a soft, even glow without harsh shadows. You don’t have to fight for good light here. It just finds you.
There’s a specific feeling we chase in our family sessions: real connection, natural movement, and light that does the heavy lifting. This evening gave us all three.
When is the best time for family photos at Spring Valley Nature Sanctuary?
We recommend booking about an hour before sunset. The tree canopy and open meadows create beautiful filtered light in the evening, with soft, warm tones and no harsh shadows. Summer and early fall are ideal for the greenest backgrounds.
How do I book a family session with Twig & Olive in the Chicago suburbs?
