Rain, Windstorm, or Shine: Monona Terrace Engagement Photos
Wind was absolutely ripping across the rooftop the day we shot these Monona Terrace engagement photos, and honestly, it made everything better. This couple had every reason to reschedule. They didn’t. They showed up, leaned into it, and gave us some of the most alive, electric frames we’ve captured all year.
When the Wind Becomes the Shot
We always tell couples that weather is not something to fight. It’s something to use. A calm, sunny afternoon gives you beautiful light, sure. But wind? Wind gives you movement, drama, and energy you simply cannot pose. Hair catching the air, fabric pulling, two people holding onto each other a little tighter than they planned. That’s the real stuff.
“It was amazing to see how Courtney used the wind to her advantage to create stunning photos. Rain, windstorm, or shine, this is proof that with talented photographers like you all, you can still get the most amazing photos.” That message from this couple still makes us smile. We pulled in close, let the wind do its thing, and shot with intention. Every frame felt cinematic.
Monona Terrace is one of Madison’s most iconic backdrops for a reason. The clean architectural lines, the open rooftop, the lake stretching out behind you. If you’re a couple considering this spot for your session, know that it delivers in any condition. We’ve shot Monona Terrace couples sessions in golden hour calm and in full gusts, and both produce something worth framing.
This is the kind of session that reminds us why we love what we do. Two people who trust the process, a location with real character, and weather that adds a story to the photos instead of taking one away. You can see more of our work on our couples photography portfolio.
Is Monona Terrace a good location for engagement photos?
It’s one of our favorites in Madison. The rooftop gives you clean lines, open sky, and Lake Monona as your backdrop. We recommend timing your session for golden hour when the light wraps across the terrace beautifully.
What happens if it’s windy or rainy on our engagement session day?
We never panic about weather, and we encourage our couples not to either. Wind and overcast skies often create the most dynamic, editorial-feeling images. We’ll always give you the option to reschedule, but more often than not, the weather works in our favor. Reach out and we can talk through your options.
