Laughter and Golden Hour: A Spring Forest Family Session
Three kids, two parents, and zero interest in standing still. That’s exactly the kind of energy we love walking into. This spring forest family session at Yosemite National Park gave us towering pines, river light bouncing off granite, and a family that was completely themselves from the first frame.
When You Let a Family Be a Family
We didn’t ask anyone to hold still. The kids ran ahead on the trail. The parents pulled each other close near the trees. Their daughter kept looking up with this grin that stopped us mid-frame. That’s the stuff we’re after. Not perfect posing. Real connection.
There’s a black-and-white close-up in this set, mom and her son nose to nose, that we keep coming back to. It’s quiet. It’s tender. We pulled in tight because everything else in the world fell away. That kind of frame is why we do this work.
Each kid got their own solo portraits in the woods. Their personalities came through immediately. One leaned against a branch like he’d been modeling for years. Another couldn’t stop laughing. Dappled light filtering through the canopy gave us soft, even tones without fighting harsh sun. If you’re considering family photography in California, Yosemite’s forests are hard to beat for that natural, layered backdrop.
We ended the session down by the river. That final setting delivered. Granite walls rising behind them, water catching the late light. Mom stood in the current in a blue gown that looked made for this exact spot. We shot wide to let the scale of Yosemite do what it does. Sometimes the best move is getting out of the way and letting the landscape hold the frame.
These are the sessions we think about long after the gallery is delivered. Loose, loud, full of life. If you’re planning a family session and want it to feel like your actual family, we’d love to hear from you.
Is Yosemite a good location for a family photo session?
It’s one of our favorites. Towering pines, open meadows, rivers, and granite backdrops give us a huge range of looks within a short walk. Late afternoon light in the valley is especially beautiful, and kids love the adventure of a place this dramatic.
How do I book a family session with Twig & Olive outside of Wisconsin?
We travel for family sessions throughout the year. Reach out through our contact page with your location and ideal timing. Travel sessions work best with a little lead time so we can scout the light and nail down the best spots.
