Together Is Our Favorite Place: Sunset Family Desert Session
Golden hour in the desert hits different. The light goes from warm to electric in about twenty minutes, and if you’re standing among the boulders at Joshua Tree National Park when it happens, everything around you turns to copper and honey. That’s exactly where we found ourselves for this sunset family desert session, and honestly, we couldn’t have asked for a better canvas.
Let the Desert Do Its Thing
This family showed up loose, playful, and completely game for whatever the landscape threw at them. The kids were scrambling up rocks before we even finished scouting angles. We love that. When a session starts with that kind of energy, our job is just to keep up and stay ready.
The boulders at Joshua Tree are massive, textured, and warm to the touch by late afternoon. We used them as both backdrop and playground, letting the kids explore while we pulled back wide to capture the scale. There’s something about a family dwarfed by ancient rock that puts everything in perspective.
Mom’s red dress against all that dusty gold and sage was a photographer’s dream. Color choices like that don’t happen by accident, and it gave us contrast in every single frame. If you’re planning a session out here, bold color is your best friend.
Once the sun dropped low, we pulled the parents away for a few frames just the two of them. The light was doing that thing where it wraps around everything, soft and directional at the same time. We shot wide to show how small they looked against all that rock, and the result is one of our favorite images from the entire evening.
The last few minutes of a sunset family desert session are always the sweetest. Everyone’s relaxed, the pressure is off, and the light is fading into that deep amber glow. We kept shooting as they walked through the brush, and those candid, end-of-session moments gave us some of the most honest frames of the night. That’s the kind of work we live for. When is the best time of day for family photos at Joshua Tree?
The last hour before sunset is ideal. The light turns warm and soft, the temperatures cool down, and the boulders pick up gorgeous color. We always recommend timing your session so we finish right as the sun dips below the horizon.
