Spring One Year Milestone Session: All That Personality

Red sweater, fall leaves, and a baby boy who wanted nothing to do with sitting still. This spring one year milestone session reminded us why we love photographing this age. Everything is new, everything is interesting, and the expressions change by the second. We grabbed our cameras and followed his lead.

Chasing a One-Year-Old Through the Leaves

This little guy showed up in a red fair isle sweater, and we knew right away the fall palette was going to work in our favor. Golden leaves, warm tones, a plaid blanket spread out on the ground. The whole scene had this cozy, effortless feel that we didn’t have to manufacture. We just had to be ready. Madison gives us no shortage of spots like this, especially when the light drops low and the colors start to glow.

Dad was right there with him, lifting him up, making him laugh, letting him explore. Those interactions are where the real images live. We pulled in tight for the candid stuff because that’s where personality shows up. A grin mid-crawl. A look of total concentration. The wobble of someone still figuring out how legs work. One year olds give you about three seconds of cooperation before they’re onto the next thing, and honestly, that’s when we do our best work.

The final shot on the blanket was pure luck and patience. He looked straight up at the camera with this wide, open grin, and we fired. Sometimes the simplest setup gives you the frame that ends up on the wall.
