Golden Light and Big Smiles: Sunset Nature Family Session
The light was doing that thing where everything turns gold and the whole world slows down. That’s exactly where we found ourselves during this sunset nature family session at UW Arboretum, and honestly, it was one of those evenings that reminded us why we do this.
Letting the Moments Happen
This crew showed up ready to play, and that made our job easy. The kids were running through the grass, ducking behind trees, laughing at absolutely nothing. We leaned into all of it. Some of our favorite frames from the night came from moments nobody was trying to pose for.
The Arboretum gives us so much to work with. Open meadows, winding paths, that soft canopy of green filtering the last bit of sun. We shot wide in the open fields to let the landscape breathe, then pulled in tight for the quiet, connected moments between parents and kids. The contrast between those two energies is what makes a gallery feel complete.
If you’re considering the UW Arboretum for family photos, spring and early summer are hard to beat. The green is lush, the trails are alive, and golden hour stretches out just long enough to give us room to explore. We timed this session to catch the last forty-five minutes of light, and it paid off in every single frame.
These two were completely relaxed, and that is when we do our best work. No stiff smiles, no awkward hand placement. Just a family being a family while we moved around them and caught what was real.
When is the best time of year for family photos at UW Arboretum?
Late spring through early fall gives you the best combination of green foliage and warm golden hour light. We love scheduling sessions about 45 minutes before sunset so the light is soft and the trails are less crowded.
