Wrapped in Sunshine: A Spring Newborn Family Session
The magnolias were at peak bloom, and there was a brand new baby sleeping through all of it. This spring newborn family session at the UW Arboretum gave us warm golden light, soft petals overhead, and a family of four still figuring out this whole outnumbered thing. We loved every frame.
Star Magnolias and a Very Patient Baby
We timed this session for golden hour on purpose. Late afternoon light in the Arboretum does something to skin tones that no studio modifier can touch. When you add star magnolias in full bloom, the whole scene writes itself. We shot wide under those trees to let the canopy do the work, and the results were exactly what we hoped for.
The real star, though, was the big sister. She was gentle and curious and completely in her own world. At one point she placed a flower on the baby’s blanket without anyone prompting her. We pulled in tight for that frame because moments like that do not repeat. That’s the kind of thing we chase in every family session.
Families sometimes worry about bringing a newborn outdoors. We get it. But we read babies and light at the same time. If the little one needs a break, we pause. If the sun shifts, we move. The session flows around the baby, never the other way around. That flexibility is honestly when we do our best work.
The UW Arboretum gives us meadows, tree canopy, and wildflowers all within a short walk. If you’re thinking about outdoor newborn photos in Madison, this is one of our favorite spots. The paths are easy, the light filters beautifully through the branches, and in late spring the whole place feels like it was built for family portraits.
Is UW Arboretum a good location for outdoor newborn photos?
It’s one of our top picks in the Madison area. The Arboretum offers shaded paths, blooming trees, and open meadows all within a short walk, which means we can adjust quickly if your baby needs a quieter spot or different light.
When is the best time of year to book an outdoor newborn session?
Late spring through early fall works well in Wisconsin. We schedule around golden hour and mild temperatures so your baby stays comfortable the entire time. Reach out and we’ll find the right window for your family.
