Winter Light at the Arboretum: An Arboretum Winter Maternity Session

Late afternoon winter light has a softness you can’t replicate. It wraps around everything. Pair it with bare branches and quiet trails at the UW Arboretum, and the result is something special. This Arboretum winter maternity session reminded us why we keep coming back here, especially when the trees are stripped down and the light has nowhere to hide.

Quiet Paths and Golden Light

Most people think of the Arboretum in summer or fall. Winter is our favorite time to shoot there. The paths empty out. The color palette goes muted and earthy. Golden hour stretches because the light drops low so early. We leaned into all of it for this session, pulling back wide on the trails to let the landscape do the work, then moving in close for the quieter moments.

These two made our job easy. Relaxed, genuinely connected, not trying to perform. That kind of energy is everything in a maternity session. We don’t need elaborate setups or perfect conditions. Give us two people excited about what’s coming, a little open sky, and some gorgeous winter light. We’ll give you images that feel like your life right now.

If you’re expecting and considering the Arboretum, winter is worth a serious look. The quiet is real. The light is forgiving. Everything feels more intimate without the summer crowds. Check out more of our work on the maternity and newborn portfolio page.

Frequently Asked Questions about Maternity Sessions at UW Arboretum

Is winter a good time for maternity photos at the UW Arboretum?

It really is. The bare trees open up sightlines and let in gorgeous low-angle light, and the trails are much quieter than in summer or fall. We recommend scheduling about an hour before sunset so the golden hour light does the heavy lifting.
