A Beautiful Afternoon: Winter Moody Skies Session
Overcast light and golden grass stretching in every direction. That was the scene for this winter moody skies session at Sweetwater Summit Regional Park in Bonita, and honestly, we couldn’t have asked for better conditions. Moody skies are a photographer’s best friend. Even light, rich colors, and nobody squinting.
Letting a Family Be Themselves
This family of six showed up with energy to spare. Four kids, two parents, and zero interest in standing still. That’s exactly how we like it. We told them to walk, hold hands, chase each other, and just do their thing on the trails. Our best frames came when nobody was thinking about the camera at all.
We pulled each kid aside for solo portraits too, and those quiet one-on-one moments told a completely different story. A baby sitting on the path. A toddler tilting her chin up at the sky. Their older brother walking the trail like he owned it, and their sister mid-laugh. Every single personality came through, and we barely had to direct a thing.
Mom in that red dress against the muted browns and sage greens of the park? A photographer’s dream. We shot wide to let the landscape breathe, then pulled in tight for the tender stuff. Her kissing the baby, wrapping her arm around her son. Those are the frames that end up on the wall. If you’re considering Sweetwater Summit for your own family session, know that the open trails and soft winter palette give you options most parks can’t match.
Our last stretch was all movement. Walking the trail together, the couple stealing a moment while the kids ran ahead, and the littlest one swinging between Mom and Dad. These are the kinds of Bonita family photos that actually feel like real life. That’s always the goal.
Is Sweetwater Summit Regional Park a good location for family photos?
It’s one of our favorites in the Bonita area. Open trails, rolling hills, and natural grasses create a beautiful backdrop year-round, and in winter the overcast skies give us soft, even light that’s ideal for portraits.
