Joy Looks Good on You: A Beach Family Session

This family showed up with a French bulldog, a kid who never stopped laughing, and zero interest in standing still. Exactly our kind of beach family session. We met them at Gray Whale Cove State Beach just south of Pacifica, and from the first frame on that dirt trail to the last light over the water, the whole evening felt effortless.

Pine Trees, Golden Light, and a Lot of Laughing

The session started on the trail above the beach, winding through coastal pines. The light was filtering through the branches in that warm, broken way that makes everything feel a little golden, and we leaned into it. Mom and her son walking down the wooden steps together was one of our favorite moments. She pulled him close and he just cracked up. We pulled in tight for that one because the expressions were too good to shoot wide.

Dad got in on the action fast. Flipping his son upside down, holding him mid-air while both of them lost it. That’s the kind of frame we live for. Not posed, not prompted, just a dad being a dad and a kid having the best time of his life. We always tell families: play with your kids. Chase them. Be ridiculous. The photos take care of themselves.

Once we moved down to the sand, everything shifted. The cliffs opened up behind them, the ocean stretched out, and the light went full golden hour. They swung their son between them while the bulldog trotted alongside, completely unbothered. If you’re considering family photography in California, a location like this gives you variety that’s hard to beat: forest, cliffs, sand, and sunset all in one session.

The sunset that evening was one of those you don’t plan for but are grateful you caught. Pink and orange stretching across the entire sky. We shot wide to let it fill the frame. It was the kind of ending that makes you want to stay a little longer.
