A Session Full of Love: Fall Foliage Family Session

Golden hour light filtering through the trees, two kids who couldn’t stop laughing, and parents who were completely at ease. This fall foliage family session at Garver Feed Mill had the kind of energy that makes our job feel effortless.

When Everyone Forgets the Camera

We always tell families the same thing: just be yourselves. Play, chase each other, be silly. The more natural the interaction, the better the photos turn out. Posed and stiff has never been our style, and it won’t be yours either.

There was a moment during this session where mom leaned in to kiss her daughter, and the little one just lit up. We pulled in tight for that one. Those are the frames that end up on the wall.

Then mom and her son started doing this nose-to-nose thing, and the light was coming through the canopy in these soft, broken patches. We shot it wide to get the trees in the frame, then close to capture the connection. That shift between the two is something we live for in family photography.

The grounds around Garver Feed Mill give us so much to work with. Wooded trails open up to brick walls covered in ivy, and the textures shift completely from one spot to the next. If you’re looking for family photos in Madison that don’t all look the same, this is the spot.

We’ve been photographing families for over two decades, and sessions like this one remind us why we keep doing it. No two families are the same. The way these four moved together, the way the kids kept cracking each other up, that’s theirs. Our job is to notice it and press the shutter at the right time.
