Golden Light and Big Smiles: A Family Golden Hour Session
Fall light in the Midwest has a warmth to it that you can almost feel through the photos. This family golden hour session at Garver Feed Mill landed right in that sweet spot, when the sun drops low enough to turn everything gold and the air just starts to cool. We grabbed our gear and headed outside with this family of three, and from the first frame, the energy was exactly what we hope for.
Letting the Light Do the Work
There’s a reason we love shooting around Garver Feed Mill in October. The fields surrounding the building catch that late afternoon sun perfectly, and the tall grasses turn into this soft, glowing backdrop that we couldn’t build in a studio if we tried. We shot wide to let the landscape breathe, then pulled in tight for the real stuff: the way this little guy grabbed his mom’s face, the way dad couldn’t stop laughing.
Every family has their own rhythm. Some are loud and physical, all tickle fights and shoulder rides. Some are quieter, more snuggly. This crew leaned hard into playful, and honestly, that’s when we do our best work. Kids don’t pose well, but they play beautifully. Our job is just to keep up.
One of our favorite moments happened near the end. The sun was almost gone, and this little guy threw his arms up like he’d just won something. Mom leaned in for a kiss on the cheek, and we caught it all. That kind of frame doesn’t come from direction. It comes from letting a family be themselves while the light does the rest.
If you’re considering family photography in Madison, fall is the season to do it. The colors, the light, the comfortable temperatures: it all comes together. And Garver Feed Mill gives us variety without having to drive all over the city. Fields, paths, texture, architecture, all within a few minutes of our studio.
When is the best time of year for a family golden hour session at Garver Feed Mill?
Fall is our top pick. The fields around Garver are full of golden grasses, the light is warm and low, and the temperatures are comfortable for families with young kids. We typically schedule golden hour sessions about 60 to 90 minutes before sunset for the best results.
