Stories Worth Telling: A Family Wildflower Session
Golden hour, a field full of sunflowers and wildflowers, and three kids who wanted nothing to do with standing still. This family wildflower session near Mayville was exactly the kind of chaos we love photographing.
Let Them Run
We always tell families the same thing: just be yourselves. Play, laugh, tackle each other in the grass. Real moments are what make great photos, and this crew delivered. Their kids bounced between hay bales and sunflower rows like they owned the place. Mom and Dad just let it happen. That trust is everything.
The light that evening was ridiculous. Warm, low, and wrapping around everything it touched. We shot wide to pull in the color of the fields. Then we got in close for the quiet moments: a forehead kiss, a toddler leaning into mom. Those are the details that disappear if you blink. If you’re looking for family photography in Wisconsin, wildflower season in this part of the state is hard to beat.
After two decades behind the camera, sessions like this still remind us why we do this work. No two families look alike. No two evenings feel the same. That is exactly the point. These five were completely themselves, and honestly, that is when we do our best work.
If you’ve been thinking about getting your family in front of the camera, picture this: a Mayville field at golden hour, your kids doing their thing, and us catching every bit of it. That’s a family wildflower session. It’s one of our favorite things to shoot.
When is the best time of year for a wildflower family session in Wisconsin?
Late spring through midsummer is peak wildflower season in central Wisconsin. We recommend booking for late May or June to catch the fullest blooms, and we always schedule these sessions about an hour before sunset for the warmest light.
