Running Wild: A Desert Sunset Family Session
Three kids, two parents, and a whole lot of open desert. This desert sunset family session outside Phoenix gave us the kind of light and landscape that makes you forget about posing and just let everyone run. We met this family at a preserve in the Sonoran Desert right as golden hour was taking over, and from the first frame, they brought an energy that matched the scale of everything around them.

Your People, Unfiltered
The thing about shooting in the desert is that there’s nowhere to hide. No walls, no props, no distractions. Just sand, saguaros, and sky. That simplicity strips a session down to what actually matters: the way people interact when they’re comfortable. These kids took off the moment their feet hit the trail, and we were right there with them.

We always tell families to just be themselves during a session. Play, laugh, chase each other. In a place like this, kids respond to the vastness immediately. They sprint, they climb rocks, they grab each other’s hands and pull. Those unscripted bursts are where we find the images that end up on walls. We pulled back wide to let the landscape do its work, then moved in close when the tenderness showed up: a toddler reaching for mom, siblings leaning into each other without thinking.

A Phoenix desert preserve at golden hour is one of our favorite environments to work in. The warm tones of the sand pick up the last light of the day, and everything goes amber and soft. If you’re considering family photography in Phoenix, this kind of setting gives you something no studio ever could. The colors shift by the minute, and we chased every last one.

By the end, we had silhouettes against a sky that looked painted. That shift from bright golden light to deep sunset color is something we live for, and this family gave us the freedom to follow it all the way through. Check out more of our work on our family photography portfolio.
When is the best time of year for a desert family session near Phoenix?
Late fall through early spring offers the most comfortable temperatures and the richest sunset light. We shot this session in February, and the golden hour color across the Sonoran landscape was incredible. Summer months are extremely hot and limit how long families can comfortably be outside.
Does Twig & Olive travel to Phoenix for family sessions?
We do. We travel for portrait sessions throughout the year and love building in desert locations when the timing works. Reach out through our contact page to start the conversation.
