Running Wild: A Sunset Family Session
Golden hour hit and this little guy took off running through the grass, and honestly, that’s when we knew this sunset family session was going to be one of our favorites. Mom and Dad were relaxed, the light was pouring through the trees at Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge, and nobody was worried about being perfect. That’s the energy we love walking into.
Let the Kids Lead
We tell every family the same thing before we start: just be yourselves. Chase each other. Be silly. Let the kids do their thing. The best frames almost always come from the moments nobody is trying to pose. This family understood that instinctively. Their little one was laughing, squirming, and running laps around them, and we were right there catching all of it.
The refuge gave us a mix of open fields and tree-lined trails, which meant we could shift between wide, airy shots and something more intimate without moving far. We pulled in tight for the close-up moments and then stepped way back to let the landscape do the talking. If you’re looking for a Saginaw family session location that feels wild and open, this place delivers.
There’s a frame in here where Dad has their son up over his head, and the kid is absolutely losing it laughing. That is the photo. Not the posed one, not the one where everyone looked at the camera on cue. The one where they forgot we were there. That’s what family photography is really about for us.
Fall light at this time of day wraps everything in this warm amber glow, and it just made their colors pop. Mom’s green dress against the golden grass, the toddler’s little outfit, the trees going orange in the background. We didn’t have to do much. The palette was already there. We just had to show up and pay attention.
Is Shiawassee National Wildlife Refuge a good location for family photos?
It’s one of our favorite spots near Saginaw. The refuge has open meadows, wooded trails, and beautiful natural light, especially during golden hour in the fall. It gives us a range of backdrops without needing to drive between locations.
