January Golden Light: A Winter Couples Portrait Session

Low January sun does something we can’t quite explain. It sits just above the tree line and throws long golden warmth across everything. Even a snow-covered field feels intimate in that light. That’s exactly what we walked into for this winter couples portrait session at Token Creek Park in DeForest. These two made the most of every minute.

Why We Keep Coming Back to Token Creek in Winter

We have a thing for Token Creek. We shoot there in every season, but winter strips the park down to its bones. Honestly, that’s when we love it most. No crowds. No visual clutter. Just open fields, bare birch trees, and light that wraps around a couple like it was placed there on purpose. The clean simplicity puts all the attention exactly where it belongs.

These two were completely relaxed, and that is when we do our best work. They laughed, leaned into each other, and never once looked stiff. We pulled in close for the quiet moments. We shot wide when the landscape deserved its own frame. The golden hour light at Token Creek in January sits so low it backlights everything. We leaned into that warmth for nearly every shot.

If you’re considering a January or February couples session, don’t wait for warmer weather. The light this time of year is unlike anything summer can offer. Bundle up, bring someone you love, and let the park do the rest. You can see more of our couples work here to get a feel for what we do.
