Candid and Connected: Winter Wonderland Family Session
Three kids in holiday outfits, a baby in a green velvet suit, and fresh snow on every surface. This winter wonderland family session had all the ingredients for a gallery we couldn’t wait to deliver. The cold pushed everyone closer together, and that’s exactly the kind of energy we want in front of our camera.

Snow, Snuggles, and Zero Posing Rules
We’ve been photographing families for over two decades, and winter sessions still surprise us. The muted palette strips everything back. Snow bounces light up into faces. Bare branches add a graphic edge to every frame. There’s a reason we never skip the cold months.

With kids, the cold is actually an advantage. Snowballs get thrown, footprints get inspected, and cold noses lead to the best snuggles. We pulled in tight for those huddle moments because that closeness is where the real images live. One frame of all five of them leaning in around the baby, totally unscripted, ended up being the kind of shot that belongs on a wall.

If you’re considering a winter family session in the Madison area, don’t let the temperature talk you out of it. Bundle up, lean into the chaos, and let us handle the rest. The galleries that come out of these sessions are some of our favorites every year.

That green velvet suit on the baby, the fur vest on the oldest, the way the snow caught the last bit of golden light through the trees. These are the details we live for. Check out more of our work on our family photography portfolio.
When is the best time of day for a winter family session in Madison?
Late afternoon works best. The sun sits low in winter, which gives us soft, directional light that wraps around faces and bounces off the snow. We typically start about an hour before sunset to make the most of golden hour.
