A Session Full of Love: Sunset Forest Family Session

Flower crowns, bare feet on creek rocks, and two little girls who could not stop giggling. This sunset forest family session near Cannon Beach is one of those shoots where everything just clicked. The forest was lush. Light poured in soft and golden. The whole family was so tuned in to each other that we barely had to direct a thing.

Creek Beds, Fern Walls, and Zero Shoes

We love when a location does the heavy lifting. The forest just outside Cannon Beach gave us mossy rocks, fern-lined creek banks, and light filtering through the canopy like it was placed there on purpose. We shot wide to let the landscape breathe. Then we pulled in tight for the moments that mattered most: a toddler mid-laugh, a dad squeezing both girls at once, mom pressing her nose into a baby’s cheek.

If you’re considering family photography in Cannon Beach, know this: the Oregon coast forests are moody, dramatic, and completely forgiving with light. Overcast skies diffuse everything evenly. When the sun does break through, it turns the whole scene gold. We’ve worked in a lot of beautiful places, and this is one of the most photogenic backdrops out there.

The girls ran barefoot across creek rocks, splashed in the water, and took off down a wooden bridge. Mom and dad stole a quiet moment behind them. That kind of chaos is exactly what we want. Posed portraits are fine, but the images families actually frame are the ones where everyone forgot we were there.

We ended the session at golden hour. The final frames of just the two of them in that warm, sun-drenched forest were something special. After a session full of kid energy, those quiet couple portraits always feel like a deep exhale. We live for that contrast. Check out more of our work on the family photography portfolio.

Frequently Asked Questions about Family Sessions at Cannon Beach

When is the best time for a family session near Cannon Beach?

Late afternoon gives you the best light, especially in the forests just off the coast. The canopy filters harsh sun beautifully, and golden hour turns the whole scene warm and soft. Spring and early fall tend to be the most comfortable for kids running barefoot.
